The LifeSkills Training program is a highly effective, substance abuse prevention program designed to focus primarily on the major social and psychological factors promoting substance use/abuse. The LST program was developed by Dr. Gilbert J. Botvin, a psychologist at Cornell University.
Dr. Botvin discovered that students who received the LifeSkills program were better prepared to deal with the challenges of life, but were also less likely to smoke, drink or use drugs. The LifeSkills program is an exciting new breakthrough. The specific areas covered are:
  • Self esteem and awareness
  • Problem solving and decision making
  • Communication skills
  • Manage anxiety
  • Making new friends
  • Standing up for your own rights and beliefs
  • Say "no" to unfair requests
  • Resist media's advertising pressures
  • Resist other pressures to use drugs
In MCCSC there are 15 sessions taught in the 6th Grade; 10 booster sessions in the 7th grade and 5 booster sessions in the 8th grade. Most classes are taught by school personnel, with the exception of the 6th grade classes within the city limits. These classes are co-taught with the City of Bloomington Police Department's Jim Graft. Jim has been teaching Drug Education in MCCSC for over 10 years.

For More information go to the LifeSkills Website: http://www.lifeskillstraining.com/, or contact Jennifer Staab, MCCSC Drug Education Coordinator <jstaab@mccsc.edu>,

The National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information has a wide variety of resources, posters, and lesson plans for school staff, parents, and community activists.
