Opening the Library Media Center
The following activities need to be accomplished before students begin using the library media center. Three days to a week may be needed depending on the size of the school and the differing responsibilities of the library media specialist.
- Selection of materials and check out for teachers.
- Collaboration with teachers on materials and reference assistance.
- Checking out audio-visual equipment to teachers.
- Making all new materials-- books, videos, computer programs, audio tapes, etc.-- ready for use by labeling and inputting data into the circulation/catalog program.
- Scheduling of classes into the library media center.
- Recruiting and scheduling and training volunteers.
- Preparing library cards for all students; inputting new students in the circulation program; updating room numbers for continuing students.

Closing of Library Media Center
The following activities need to be done in order to maintain the library media center collection and should be done after library classes have ended. At least a week is needed. These responsibilities might be different depending on size of school and r
esponsibilities of the library media specialists.
- Put the book collection in exact order going title by title in each section of the library media center-- Easy, Fiction, Non-Fiction, Reference, Professional.
- Look for "lost" books.
- Continue to encourage students to find and return books, usually by using some incentive program.
- Put videos, computer programs, and other audio visual items in exact order.
- Continue to encourage teachers to find and return all materials.
Teachers want to know what is checked out to them so that they can encourage any students who have items to return them.
- Maintain equipment as necessary.
- Collect library cards to reuse next year and file.
- Order materials needed and requested.
- Ongoing weeding and studying of collection.
- Secure library media center for the summer.
- Host Monroe County Public Library visit to publicize their summer programs.
