Agenda and Outline

The Morning of Day 1: Change. These sessions, and the projects which result, are less about technology and more about change. Our primary reason for coming together is not so much to teach you which key to push on a computer or how to set the margins in a word processor. Our purpose is to suggest which technology tool to use to bring about change in how we teach and how students learn.

Change is happening all around us. Peers making changes.

We're going to look at what some schools, classes, children and teachers have done. We're going to ask: What was learned? What skills were used? Are these skills different from what we've been expecting?

  • 21st Century Skills
  • Essential Skills
  • Authentic Learning
  • Technology and Systemic Change
  • Technology's Impact on Education Practices
  • Technology's Impact on Learning
What are the strategies, approaches and models that I can use to change my classroom?

The Afternoon of Day 1:  Everything that we have seen, everything that schools, teachers and students have attempted in these examples can be done with a simple set of content-free tools.

The MCCSC Core Applications Toolbox
Word Processing Word
Spreadsheet Excel
Presentation PowerPoint HyperStudio
Planning Inspiration Kidspiration
Internet Internet Explorer 4.x Netscape 4.x
Web Publishing Front Page (Express) Word
With any single one of these tools, or sometimes with one or two of the tools, we can find starting points in our schools to integrate technology into the curriculum.

The project is the Tip of the Iceberg. The teams ...
  • define a project
  • implement with students
  • include a process to involve other faculty; and
  • describe the outcomes
Brainstorm each of the elements; Storyboard the steps; Research the information; and Write the plan in Collaboration.

During this process, the team selects from the Core Applications Toolbox, the one or two pieces of software that will allow them to produce the desired product.

Day 2:  After making preliminary plans about the project and the applications, the team will have three concurrent options:

  1. One-hour Tutorials on each of the six core applications. This is a chance for the team (or individuals to double check their own understanding and skill level in the selected application(s). While not in a tutorial session, each team can be in
  2. Open Computer Labs to begin developing project components with one or more of the Applications Facilitators or in a
  3. Planning Room with other facilitators.

Tentative Schedule(s) for June 19

The teams and individuals can move freely between options 2. amd 3., with only option 1. scheduled at specific times.

Either today, or later in the project, the team will design a grading/evaluation rubric for the project and for use with the students. The Planning Issues and Management and Implementation Strategies documents can be started at this time

Day 3 . Day 4 . Day 5:  Between the end of Day 2 and early August, each team will schedule approximately 18 hours of work sessions at a location of its choice. These may be in full- or partial-day increments. Arrangements may be made with the Applications Facilitators to meet with the teams an provide Core Toolbox assistance.

It would be appropriate to review the Planning Issues and Management and Implementation Strategies documents to be sure the plan is ready to roll out with students in the fall semester.

First Semester 2k1: During rollout of the project, the team will be in communication with the Instructional Technology Coordinator so that applications assistance and or management strategies can be in place. A critical element of the plan is a strategy for involving other staff and building other teams for expansion of the project into Phase 2.
