Home Pages and Home Pages

In a real sense, "home" pages define the World Wide Web.

Technically, because of the nature of the Web, any and all pages or documents could be called home pages.

  • Tim's page could easily be "Tim's Home Page."
  • Tim's page on Disney movies could be "Tim's Disney Movie Home Page."
  • Tim's page on favorite websites could be "Way Cool Web Links Home Page."
On the Web, all pages can be addressed and accessed directly. You don't have to first access Tim's page to get to his "Way Cool Web Links." Just enter the URL:

Thus, the Web.

Collections and Collections

However, the Internet and the WWW are usually defined as collections of computers. Effectively, then, access to that page follows a hierarchy:
  1. You first connect to the web server (www) computer at mccsc.edu domain.
  2. You are passed on to Tim's space (~twootton).
  3. Finally, the requested document (favlink.html) is called up and sent back to you.
If you don't know the exact URL for Tim's Way Cool Web Links, your journey could stop along the way at which either indexes all of Tim's documents or displays Tim's Home Page.

You might even need to stop off for a visit to the mccsc.edu home pages:

where you are hoping to find a link or a connection to Tim or to his Way Cool Web Links page.

A collection of computers on this collection of computers operate a variety of searching tools.

  • Some are constantly crawling into and around any and all other online computers, cataloging words, phrases, images, and ideas from filenames, <TITLE> and <META> structures, and even the content of "billions of billions" (--in memory of Carl Sagan) of pages.
  • A few ask permission, requiring that the page owner register the URL with their services.
  • Some organize these random bytes into library-like hierarchies of categories -- business, computers, education, philosophy.
  • Most allow you to enter keywords or phrases into their database to inquire into the location of pages dealing with your topic.
The output of of a search for "Tim" and "Favorite Sites" should include a link to the URL we're seeking: It certainly includes a variety of sites and pages, all vaguely related to "Tim" and/or "Way Cool."

These are home pages, websites or Web Sites

Websites and Web Sites

A home page can be called a website. Web Sites or Websites, though, seem to refer to the collection of pages or documents relating to a particular domain -- such as all the pages stored and accessed through
    web.mccsc.edu
-- while website is pages which appear to be grouped in a particular hieracrchy. Tim's website includes his home page, his Disney Movie page, his page of Way Cool Web Links, and any other pages located in his space on his domain.

    Website (or website)
  1. all the pages gathered under a single domain. In the MCCSC, this is web.mccsc.edu/ and includes all of the www.schoolname.mccsc.edu locations.
  2. the specific pages created by an individual for personal, subject area, or other use: web.mccsc.edu/~userid/
  3. the specific pages representing a school or a department: ie. www.schoolname.mccsc.edu/ or web.mccsc.edu/administration/

Libraries and Research

  • Many educational resources are available on the Internet. These include databases, books, magazines, software, government documents, museums, libraries and universities around the world. An excellent starting point is Info Connect. You'll find connections to the best professional and academic Internet sites -- including the Web, Gopher, telnet, newsgroups and ftp.

  • The Monroe County Public Library and Indiana University libraries have vast connections to many other sites and libraries around the nation and the world.

Take a look at high school libraries on the Internet: One of the most comprehensive is South Eugene, OR which offers references, E-Books, and class support. Discover the World of Information available through the facilities and services of the Bloomington High School North Library.

Additional library resources can be found at Lifelong Learning/Libraries on the MCCSC site.

  • In order to conduct research on the Internet you will need tools to query Gophers, databases and World Wide Web sites. You will be looking for people and information and, at times, just searching. Visit Using Search Utilities for a tutorial on searching the Internet.

  • Check out the Search Utilities at Net Search on your browser, use the multitude of HoosierNet/CUI utilities available through the MCCSC Network.
