8TH GRADE
LANGUAGE ARTS
Mrs. Kristin Poage
In 8th grade literature we will be studying
different cultures and events. Each literature unit is
based on an anchor piece with supplemental literature from
poetry, short stories, essays, and folktales.
There will be several ways in which students will fulfill writing
requirements. These will be through portfolio, journal,
demand writings, interviews, research project and autobiography.
There will also be several personal essays, poetry writings and
other self-selected writings.
In class students will receive grammar lessons through their
writings and individual worksheets for those with certain
problems. Most grammar lessons will be based on the
students personal test score data.
We will be doing a variety of oral demonstrations including
discussions, group presentations, and formal or informal
speeches. In 8th grade students will be expected
to speak often in front of their classmates.
Work is expected to be turned in at the time it is due.
In most instances no late work will be accepted. If late a
parent note will be required along with a point deduction, per
Jag Team Rules. Grades are based on a point system with
each piece being assigned a point value. The grade the
student receives is determined by the points they have earned
divided by the points possible.
In the second
semester each 8th grader will complete a semester long
project dealing with their life story. Requirements for
this will be passed out close to winter break. There are
several areas in which parental or family input would be helpful.
I encourage you to begin looking through old photo albums and
discussing memories as soon as possible to make this assignment
easier.
In my class students are expected to treat others and me with the
utmost respect. It is the students responsibility to
come to class prepared and willing to work and participate
every day. Assignments will have due dates. If these
dates cannot be met, the student needs to speak with me prior
to the deadline.
My goal is to provide a learning-friendly environment for all
students. If you have any questions, please call 330-2451
