Teacher Contact Information:

            Kara Parker: 330-7714   X2320                                              kparker@mccsc.edu

Supplies:  Every day you should come to class prepared.  That is, you must have your book, folder/binder/notebook, pencil, pen, completed work, and scientific calculator.

Assignments:  Assignments will include projects, daily problem sets, labs and lab reports.  All assignments are expected to be completed/attempted on time (this means at the beginning of class).  Assignments will be checked for completeness and/or correctness in order to determine that the student is doing his/her work and is successfully continuing the learning process.  Assignments are to be turned in with a “reader friendly” appearance.  This appearance entails:

·         First and last name in upper right hand corner

·         Page number and problem numbers of the assignment

·         Class period

·         Written legibly in pencil, with appropriate spaces to distinguish problems

·         All work shown on computation problems

·         All answers written in complete sentences on conceptual problems

Notes:  It is expected that you take notes in this course.  Taking good notes gives you a great resource to study and refer to outside of class.  Please keep notes organized.  You may want to have a separate binder for the class with separate sections for notes, homework, labs and test/quizzes.

Notes will be posted online for you to download.  You can access them from a link on the following webpage http://www.south.mccsc.edu/~kparker/kparker.htm.

Participation:  You are expected to be an active participant in classroom activities, labs and discussion.  For each day of the trimester you will receive a participation point.  If you are an active participant in class you will keep your participation point.  If you are causing a disruption, sleeping, etc. you will lose this point.

Make-up Work:

            Excused absences:

·         Work from the last day you were here is due the day you return

·         Work assigned while you were gone is due the second day of your return

·         It is your responsibility to find out what was missed and take care of turning those assignments in (all class assignments will be noted on the calendar posted on the bulletin board near the class entrance—look there to see what you have missed.  You may also want to organize a group of “class buddies.”  This group can organize a list of phone numbers to contact absent buddies and give them assignments.)

·         You must arrange a time to make up missed tests, quizzes, and labs (during SRT, before or after school, NOT DURING CLASS TIME)

Unexcused absences:

·         No work will be accepted

·         Tests, quizzes, labs and in-class work cannot be made up

Late Work Policy: In order to be a positive contributor to the class, you must complete your work on time.  I expect you to have a few questions on your homework; however, not attempting work is unacceptable.  Late work will be deducted 50% for the first day it is late.  If work is more than one day late, no credit will be given.

Extra Help: You are encouraged to take advantage of the many opportunities to receive extra help through the school or community.  You may make arrangements with me at any time for extra help before or after school.  Please try to do this in advance.

Cheating:  Cheating will not be tolerated.  I expect you to complete your OWN homework assignment.  It is expected that you may need help with your homework, but copying the answer off of a peer or letting a peer copy off of you is unacceptable.  The first offense for cheating will be receiving a zero on the homework/test/quiz/lab.  The second offense will entail further action from the administration.

Grades: Posted on-line at www.south.mccsc.edu/~kparker/webgrades/

·         Be in your seat when the bell rings

·         No food or drinks

The previous pages have been a description of the general course information for your student’s Physics 1 class.  It is important that both the guardian and the student have read and clearly understand all topics discussed.  Please feel free to contact me at any time with your concerns.
